The Nigerian educational stakeholders has paid deaf ears to the resolving of the strike which the Academic Staff Union Of University (ASUU) since December 2018. After so many days they decided to organize a nationwide referendum on February 5.
The referendum purpose was to arrive to a conclusion wether to call of the strike, since it has affected the tertiary institutions(Universities) in Nigeria or to continue with the industrial action(Strike) until the FG their demands.
Daily trust Reports that the nationwide REFERENDUM was organized by the national leadership of the union which gave directives to its zonal coordinators to meet with their various chairpersons.
The Referendum took place at the University of Ibadan , over 200 ASUU members were present and also voted for the continuation of the Strike, while about 50 voted for the suspension.
Deji Omole, the chairman of ASUU at the University said that the congress only conducted referendum on the offers of government. Omole also noted that the government had promised to release N25 billion for the revitalisation of universities while it would work on the other part of the demand after identifying sources to fund them.
He also quoted that the federal government should pay up the remaining allowances and the union would not be distracted by the upcoming 2019 General Election.
